HISTORY OF MCCORMICK RANCH
From a working ranch
to a Scottsdale landmark.
The community association identifies McCormick Ranch as Scottsdale’s first upscale master-planned community. Its story began with Anne and Fowler McCormick, who purchased a 160-acre ranch and adobe home in April 1944.
Their holdings eventually grew to more than 4,200 acres. Cattle and Arabian horses shaped the working ranch; Anne’s breeding program helped establish Scottsdale’s equestrian reputation. Horse-breed street names near Arabian Trail and Mountain View Road still reflect that heritage.
In 1967, the family donated land to Scottsdale, including the site of today’s McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Anne’s son, Guy Stillman, helped bring its railroad vision to life.
Kaiser-Aetna purchased the ranch in 1970 for $12.1 million. The McCormick Ranch Property Owners’ Association was incorporated on September 21, 1972, marking a new chapter for the community of lakes, golf landscapes and connected neighborhoods.
